Beveled decorative maroon boards the bust of Dickens in gilt to the front.The titles "Forster's Life of Charles Dickens" etc in gilt to the spine.Boards show some shelf wear,light soilng a little dampness perhaps and there is foxing more noticeable at the(Frontis etc.) engravings (caused by the tissue paper protection).Vol. III has a split across the spine approx 2" up from the foot. The binding seems good for another couple of hundred years all be it that there minor cracking at the hinges mainly in Vol. II.The facsimile of the letter..Invitation to the Public Dinner in New York and the reverse to a Public Ball in New York has a small portion missing. Octavo, half bound in dark brown morocco leather over dark green, yellow, red and brown hand marbled paper covered boards with five raised bands decorated with gilt and 6 gilt decorations in the compartments. Gilt spine titles. All edges marbled to match boards. Lovely matching marbled endpapers. 688 pp. Illustrated with full page plates. A very attractively produced book in a very scarce one volume format. COMPLETE. A very tight, clean, unmarked volume, the mabled endpapers quite striking and fresh, very slight superficial rubbing perceptible upon closer examination on front boards. Minor rubbing shows along spine edges and very tips of boards. Foxing to blanks at beginning and end of volume not affecting the marbled endpapers. Very good plus. Very attractive and scarce..

LONDON: CHAPMAN AND HALL. Hard cover. The second volume of a two volume autobiography of Charles Dickens. Burgundy red cloth boards with gilt decoration and titles on spine. Moderate wear on board edges. Burgundy endpapers. NB: vintage newspaper cuttings(early to mid 20th Century) about Dickens have been stuck to the front and back endpapers. Cuttings on front give the cast of a 1940s radio adaptation of 'A Tale of Two Cities' and there is a teacard type colour illustration. Pencil inscription/note on the back endpaper. Tissue guard before title page. Foxing and tanning on page edges. Top edges of pages are gilt edged, the gilt has some wear from age. Previous owner name/date on half title page in pencil. A binding error affects pages 533-540(the bottom edges of these pages are not in alignment with the rest of the book, but they are all securely bound and no text is affected. Volume I, 398pp. 1812-1941-6th edition; Volume II, 462pp. 1942-1952-Twelfth Thousand; and Volume III, 552pp. 1852-1870-1st edition. Volume I has a special inserted image of the author John Forster. Forster met Dickens in 1836; he became and remained Dickens's staunch and loyal friend. Dickens appointed Forster co-executor of his will and bequeathed to him "to my dear and trusty friend" the MSS of works in Dickens's possession at the time of his death. He became Dickens's adviser and counsellor in literary matters. A very handsome set bound by Mansell in full tree calf, boards framed in a decorative gilt, red and green contrasting morocco spine labels gilt, all other compartments fully gilt decorated, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. joints had been re-enforced., some spots of rubbing to spines.
