Illustrated boards with light edgewear, scuffing and soil; spine ends and corners bumped and chipped; splits starting along joints at both ends. 1 1/4"x1/4" waterspot at fore edge of front board (interior unaffected). Binding sound. Interior lightly toned, with trace foxing and soil, and free of chips, tears, and pen/pencil marking. Pictorial eps. Numerous tiny creases to pages from handling. Small bookshop label to rear pastedown. No prev owner names or stamps. Not ex-library. Unpaginated.

No wrapper/dustjacket. Moderate wear to edges of front and back cover and spine. About 1 1/2" cracking where board cover is coming up with small piece missing lower spine. However, the binding is tight. Back cover and pages are stained--could be foxing but some looks like handing with something on fingers. See pictures/ Unpaginated. A solid, perfectly serviceable copy of the 1928 1st edition, 2nd issue (without the 'Jersey City Printing Co.' slug on copyright page), IN THE WONDERFUL PICTORIAL DUSTJACKET. Clean and VG- in its matching pictorial boards, with pronounced creasing to the front free endpaper and title page, which also shows very light chipping and 1 small closed tear along the fore-edge. And in a crisp, price-clipped (all 4 flap corners are clipped --probably by the publisher), VG- dustjacket, with light creasing at the rear panel and very light chipping to the lower-tips. Oblong octavo, lovely black-and-white illustrations by the author thruout as well as beautiful matching color-illustrated endsheets and pastedowns.

New York: Coward-McCann, 1928. First Edition. Copy number 228 of an edition limited to 250 numbered copies signed by the author / artist Wanda Gag. With an original wood engraving by Wanda Gag, not included in the book, which is also signed and dated by her in the year of publication, “’28’”. The image depicts a small cat curled up on the cushion of a rocking chair in a sitting room with a small round table and chair and two flower vases atop a draped pedestal nearby. The engraving itself measures 5 7/8” x 4 9/16” and is in a small paper frame (7 3/4” x 6 1/2”) with tissue guard. The book is in oblong format, 9 7/8” x 6 3/4”, with decorative endpapers, and is enclosed in the original publisher’s slipcase to which is affixed its special limited edition label. Additionally, the book and slipcase are housed in a custom dark brown cloth clamshell box with gilt-stamped leather at the spine.
