First reprinted in colour in 1898, this is the New Edition of 1907. Slightly larger format than Macmillan's first edition with Hugh Thomson illustrations which was published in 1891 as part of a series that became known as 'The Cranford Series'. Blue cloth with elaborate gilt decoration to upper board and spine. All edges gilt. A lovely bright copy with minor marking, rubbing to edges, and slight fraying to spine tips. Forward lean. Light dust-soiling and minor wear to page edges. Internally good with minor spotting, heavier to front and back matter. Sewn binding. The un-signed original illustration for Cranford, pen & ink on artist's board, depicting a pensive young lady in walking dress and bonnet, carrying an umbrella and standing beside a country church, calligraphic caption lower left '" - Her face seemed to have almost something of the flush of youth in it" Cranford: Chap. Decorative line and floral design to both boards. Board edges double ruled in gilt. Mottled coloured endpapers. Turn ins with double ruled lines and floral design. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Two previous owner bookplates on the front paste down endpaper. A little fading to the spine but overall a very near fine copy.
