Pages and binding are presentable with no major defects. Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Overall a good condition item. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Some light marking and sunning. Gilt lettering is darkened.

Rough cut pages are moderately tanned and thumbed at the edges, creased corners and foxing.Hinges and guttering are cracked. Binding is loose. Boards are a little rub worn with slight shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are a little bumped. Spine ends are a mildly crushed, with small splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

The subordinates chosen by the vicar-general for the work were worthy instruments of their master and their letters prove them to have been utterly unscrupulous and entirely reckless in their accusations. At the same time preachers were sent over the country to prepare the popular mind for the contemplated seizure of monastic property. A fascinating insight into the English monastic life exquisitely illustrated in colour. Top edge gilt. Bumping and wear to spine and corners. Fading to spine, with a couple of chips to cloth at top. Inscription in ink to front pastedown. Some foxing. A few page edges have tears, with a bit of loss, where at one time pages were uncut and they have not been cut neatly.

A beautiful decorated binding in purple cloth covers with gilt spine and title lettering and embossed lowers and decorations to the front. "With illustraions in color after Warwick Goble." The author, Francis Aidan Gasquet (1846 - 1929), was an English Benedictine monk and scholar and uniquely qualified to write this history. A very pretty copy with minimal wear with the exception of a few smudges to the preliminaries, slight darkening to spine and a tiny dent to spine. No interior or exterior markings. In my opinion, the Dodd, Mead New York edition is prettier than the Chatto & Windus London edition.
