Kay's illustrations invoke a more muted palette than typical Volland productions (Gordon Volland, who headed the children's department of Buzza, was the son of P.F. Volland) - yet they nicely dovetail two major aesthetic trends in US children's books of this period: the jazzy Art Deco of Volland and its imitators, and the warmer subtleties of the Brandywine school.
