Philadelphia, PA: Porter & Coates Book. Good. Cloth. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Brown cloth binding with gilt print on the spine. The tanned pages are in good clean condition, with about 150 pages having a small soil spot in the side margin and the same on the page edging. There is a name printed on the front end paper. The hinges are beginning to crack, however the cover is firmly attached. The cover has some light corner wear and some very light scuffing. The spine has light end wear and is darkened. No print date stated, but appears to be late 1800s or early 1900s. Volume III (3) only..

Volume one only (of six) of an edition of this most famous work of world history, in which Mr. Gibbon clearly and thoroughly details the decline of the Empire of Rome and offers theories as to why it happened. With explanatory footnotes (on nearly every page) by Rev. H. H. Milman. With engraved frontis portrait of Mr. Gibbon from a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds. (Index mentioned in title most likely in vol. VI.) --- In full brown cloth-covered boards with titling in gilt to cover and spine; top edge gilt. Volume lacks a dust jacket. --- Title page with tears to edges, dampstains to textblock corners, chafing to cloth edges, prior owner's signature and inkstain to front endpapers, otherwise a sound copy, though rather brittle.; 12mo - 7 to 7-1/2 in. tall; liii, 590 pages .
