Cover has moderate wear but is still very attractive (gold lettering and bands on spine are bright and clear; slight rubbing along edges of leather cover; a couple of small holes in the leather near top of spine; tips of outer corners just starting to round). Binding split after copyright page but cover held securely by twine in binding; title/copyright page partly separated from textblock. Minor foxing. No marks or writing. Rather nice condition. New York: William Wood & Co., 1865. Ninth edition, revised and improved. Used - Good. Full brown leather, black leather spine label with gilt lettering, octavo, 1102 pp. frontispiece. Ex-library with marking on spine and stamp on title page, leather scuffed with fraying at head and tail of spine, along with rubbing to joists; small closed tear in frontispiece. Foxing as per usual. Overall, internals are very sound. Good.

London edition after the second edition, revised and improved, large thick 8vo, pp. xx, [21]-1070, [2]; engraved frontispiece portrait (spotted); rebound in modern full green cloth, gilt title on spine; owner's signature on title page, text clean and sound, very good. The largest grammar ever compiled, with a useful 10-p., double column "Catalogue of English Grammars and Grammarians" which gives a short-title list of more than 350 related volumes consulted by the author. Brown, a Quaker and a native of Rhode Island, enjoyed considerable success as a teacher and a compiler of text books, some of which were still in print as late as 1929 in New York. Of English grammars, only Cobbett's appears to have enjoyed so long a life. The Grammar of English Grammars was his last and largest work. Pages still quite nice with just a light 1/4" damp stain on top edges (does not come close to text). Covers (buckram with leather raised band spine) show heavy edge wear with rubbing/scuffing/soiling and bumped corners. Spine edge wear/chipping and vertical tears along hinges.
