Paris: Garnier Frères, 1867. Original red leather bindings, with decorations to front and gilt stamped title to spines. A beautiful hand-coloured lithographed frontispiece to each volume, and 50 hand-coloured lithographed plates and 2 uncoloured lithographic plates; also many b/w text illustrations. All edges gilt. Volume 1: 339 pages; Volume 2: 324 pages. Text in French. Boards are a little rubbed at the corners, and there are some faded ink blobs to both volumes. Internally, there is sporadic spotting, but none affecting the beauty of the plates. Overall, in a very good clean condition. 275 x 185 mm (10¾ x 7¼ inches). See Sander 215, note Vicaire III, 135. Octagonal navy bookplate with a wild boar to marbled flyleaf of vol.1. A fine copy. A fine copy, in the original publisher's cartonnage bindings, a true classic of floral surrealism. This copy, with superb hand colouring to the engravings, belongs to a hitherto undescribed edition, with a separate pagination for the two parts. Of all his works Les Fleurs Animées was Grandville's own personal favorite. In the fifty hand-coloured plates Grandville portrays a flower or plant metamorphosized into a lady clad in the petals or leaves particular to that flower or plant. Exceptionally detailed, bespoke, contemporary full morocco, signed on the cover by Jill Smith, intricately inlaid, white silk moiré, framed endpapers, bearing a gilt inscription from a husband to his wife on their wedding day (Jan. 1, 1859, probably dating the binding as 1858), all edges gilt, light wear to covers, neatly rebacked, small chips to the corners of the vignette title page, a trace of foxing but printed on paper vastly superior to what was general on American books in 1847, and still near fine. 50 unprecedented engraved plates of anthropomorphic plants (simultaneously poetical and satirical) dressed in flower and leaf enhanced French couture of the day, when seamstresses were independent, hired individually and came to the customer.
