First edition. Catherine "Kate" Greenaway (17 March 1846 – 6 November 1901) was an English children's book illustrator and writer. Her drawings gave rise to a fashion in young children's clothing in the 1880s and 1890s. Greenaway spent much of her childhood at Rolleston, Nottinghamshire. She studied at what is now the Royal College of Art in London, in the section for women. (The college was then headed by Richard Burchett.) Her first book, Under the Window(1879), a collection of simple, perfectly idyllic verses about children, was a bestseller. Greenaway's paintings were reproduced by chromoxylography, by which the colors were printed from hand-engraved wood blocks by the firm of Edmund Evans. Through the 1880s… Leer más

First edition, presumed first printing. Cover of , green cloth with beige cloth over hardboard. Strong gilt title on front and black on spine. Cover is in very good to excellent condition with some minor wear along bottom front and back covers and corners. Pages are of high quality paper with beveled edges. Some light foxing on fly-leaf pages and the number 1406 neatly and in very small print inscribed at top of first title page. Green dj composed on linens like page shows wear (chipping and small tears) along bottom and top edges and a closed tear (about 2 inches long) at bottom of front dj cover. The rear flap has an advert. for Kate Greenaway's works. Dj encased in a transparent cellophane cover. Greenaway was a very popular and admired d 19th century children's book writer and illustrator. Photogravure frontispiece portrait by MISS LILY EVANS, circa 1895, 20 coloured plates, the portrait and plates all laid into recessed heavy paper with captioned guards. Publisher's quarter cloth, uncut on heavy paper, the front board with a very faint ring mark, the rear board faintly spotted, top corner of one guard creased , overall a bright and clean copy. *Not uncommon but a fine production, and to quote the Appreciation - 'One may venture to prophesy that long after the present craze for the works of the Cubists and Vorticists has been forgotten, interest in Kate Greenaway's drawings, described by Ruskin as being executed in pure graceful movement and dainty design, will continue to survive.' Not quite, but they are lovely !

A near fine book with bright clean boards and only a hint of rubbing to the corners. Internally, the book is without names inscriptions or bookplates and only a small book seller's ticket on the front paste down. The dust jacket is in very good condition considering its age with one 6cm closed tear extending from the top of the spine around onto the front board and a smaller one of under 1cm to the top edge of the rear panel.
