Greene became disenchanted with the work and prevented it from being reprinted, making it one of his scarcer titles.

First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 344pp. Dark blue cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with a blind border to the upper board. Top edge dust soiled. Cloth a little marked, with some light rubbing to two or three extremities. Edges, endpapers and several dozen preliminary leaves quite lightly spotted, and with a little further occasional mostly marginal spotting. An inch-long slit to head of the front hinge, but the binding still sound. Several small areas of surface abrasion to the front pastedown where it would appear a bookplate has been removed, and a former owner signature neatly inked to the front free endpaper. A good copy. No dust wrapper. The author's third book and second novel, which he subsequently distanced himself from and was never reprinted. Slight rubbing to board edges; scattered faint foxing within, still a sound, Very Good copy. Greene's scarce second novel. This copy with Greene family provenance, having belonged to Graham's older brother Raymond (1901-1982), a medical doctor and mountaineer who participated in the fourth Everest Expedition. He was awarded the French Legion of Honor following his service as medical advisor to Gen. Charles De Gaulle in 1960.

Bound in the original blue cloth lettered in gilt on spine, publisher's device stamped in blind on lower board, FIRST ISSUE DUST-JACKET (priced 7/6), internally very clean indeed, dust-jacket a little worn at extremities and repaired with tape on verso at head of spine, some browning to spine and section of lower panel, collector's bookplate. Greene became deeply disenchanted with his second novel, and as such the book appears in no other editions or reprints than the present example and the first American edition. According to Wobbe, the author remarked that "the title... suggested to him by Clemence Dane, is the only part of the novel he approves of".

After the success of his 1929 debut The Man Within, Greene was given an unusually large advance to write The Name of Action, which introduces key elements of his later work: espionage, revolution, a doomed love story. In this case, a callow young Englishman's plot to overthrow the German dictator is complicated by his infatuation with the man's wife: "'Mr. Chant, of - of South-West London -- offering the post of mistress to the wife of the Dictator of Trier. Doesn't it strike you as amusing - as,' she added fiercely, 'impertinent?'" A critical and commercial disappointment, The Name of Action was a source of embarrassment to Greene, who suppressed further publication: "I was trying to write my first political novel, knowing nothing of politics."
