"In 1932 a map of exploration in the American Southwest was projected but production costs were prohibitive and the publication, of necessity, was deferred. In 1949, the project was revived in a revised form and Westways engaged J. Gregg Layne, distinguished western historian, to prepare a series of 28 maps, with accompanying historical essays, covering the principal routes of trade and exploration in the American Southwest, beginning with Pike's 1806 expedition and concluding with the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869.
