NY: Wm. R. Scott Inc.. G ex-library. 1968. In 1856 14 yr old Daniel Hall put his name to shipping papers for a proposed 3 yr voyage on the whaling ship Condor. Due to . the cruelty of the captain, Daniel jumped ship and landed on the coast of Siberia with winter coming on. He learned Russian, ate horsemeat & almost died of wounds inflicted by the captain. A year later he was picked up by another whaler and came home to New Bedford. Usual library markings, ft end page tape repaired. .

Daniel Weston Hall was fifteen years old when he joined the crew of the whaling ship, 'Condor', and sailed from New Bedford harbour in 1856. Daniel's whaling adventure lasted longer than he anticipated, for due to the cruelty of the captain, he deserted the 'Condor' and spent the winter in Siberia. He was finally picked up by another American ship the follwing spring, and in another year made his way back to New Bedford in time for his nineteenth birthday. Daniel kept a journal of his adventures and in 1861 his story was published. Designer William Hogarth, while remaining faithful to the style of books published in the late nineteenth century, has enriched Daniel's account with a sail plan, a map, a whale chart, and accurate drawiings of the whaling process aboard a whaling ship. A scarce account of a teenager's adventures at sea, including Pacific whaling experiences and visits to Hawaii and Siberia. During a three-month stay in Honolulu, Hall witnessed a volcanic eruption and planned his escape from the cruel captain of the whaleship Condor. After some whaling adventures in the Pacific, Hall deserted ship along the coast of Siberia, near the bank of the Oudskoi River. He was eventually rescued as a result of his father's efforts back home in New Bedford.
