Original red linen dust jackets with gilt lettered spines (a bit darkened). Pictorial red cloth beautifully stamped in gilt. T.e.g. Illustrated with 50 photogravure plates, each with a printed tissue guard. Large folding color map tipped in at rear of Volume II. Inner rear hinge of Vol. II cracked but holding soundly. Bookplates on front pastedowns. One leaf in Vol. II (page 189-190) with a small closed tear (no loss of text). Still a very nice, bright set.

Variant binding in greenish-blue cloth decorated with gilt swans, etc. on covers, and chrysanthemum motif and gilt decoration on back-strips. T.e.g. Original silk ribbon markers extant both volumes. Illustrated with 51 photogravure plates with tissue guards imprinted with letterpress. Large fold-out color map bound in rear of Vol. II. Housed in original greenish-blue cloth dust-jackets, which are themselves in fine condition. Overall the nicest copy of this set that we have handled. Fine copies in like dust-jackets..

II, very slight shelfwear) NF/NF set/ First Winston Photogravure Books edition, with photogravures of this splendid travel memoir and social history of Japan. Hartshorne (1860-1957), lived in Japan with her father in the 1880s, and later remained as a teacher. She assisted Nitobe Inazo in writing Bushido: the soul of Japan, who in turn helped her with this work.
