A history of the US Civil War, looking at the events leading up to it, as well as recounting the events of specific battles, military campaigns and strategy, politics during the war, etc. GOOD condition. Minor fading, soiling and edgewear. Interior solid, with some foxing and spotting to the plates. Text block toned.

Parts of spine missing on Vol. I. All of outer layer of spine missing on Vol. II. Rubbing, chipping and general wear to boards. Boards are loose (but attached) on both volumes. These books need to be Rebound. Foxing and a bit of age toning to pages. Vol. II with heavier foxing to pages. While the books need to be rebound, the pages are tight. Pages are clean/unmarked but showing age. Vol. I is 506+ pages. Vol II is 702 pages. Vol. II published in 1866. "With Numerous Fine Steel Engravings" Both books are showing age and wear. But they are readable as is.

Hartford Connecticut: Hurlbut, Williams & Company, 1866. These two volumes measure approximately 9.5" x 6.75" with 506, and 702 numbered pages respectively. These volumes are in poor condition. Volume one spine is heavily cracked and has large missing pieces. Binding tape is on each volume front and rear gutters. Volume two has heavy chipping to the tail end of spine. Heavy scuffing and chipping to both volumes boards and all edges. Both hinges are cracked on both volumes. Interior pages are heavily foxed. A Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition, published even as the war continued (this is Volume One only of a projected two-volume set, sold only by subscription, a common way of publishing in the 19th century). Full leather binding in two colors; ruled, with five raised bands in gilt. A very attractive book, and uncommon. The text is clean, although it is lightly foxed throughout. 506 pages, with a 2-page advertisement from the publisher in the rear. An important source for the first-hand view. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Full-Leather. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.

Publisher's full blind-stamped leather with gilt titling and decoration of the spine. Marbled text-block edges and endpapers. Both volumes are in VERY GOOD condition showing the extremities shelf rubbed, boards lightly rubbed and handled, former owner name of the period at the first blank of both volumes, moderate foxing of the early and late text, extremely light and occasional foxing of parts of both text-blocks, otherwise the bindings are strong and tight, the text and plates are unmarked, and the boards remain bright and distinct. As pictured.

Hartford: Hurlbut, Scranton & Company, 1864. 8vo, mixed pagings; steel engraved portrait frontispiece of Abraham Lincoln, added engraved title page with the publisher "Hurlbut, Williams & Co."; 13 specimen plates; two broadside prospectuses, one in English, the other in German, bound in; subscription leaves in back with a couple of manuscript subscribers listed, including a "molder" and a "painter," both from Lambertville (New Jersey). Contemporary maroon embossed morocco, gilt spine, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers; spine samples for the gilt cloth and library sheep bindings mounted to pastedowns. Edges scuffed and rubbed, spine faded; preliminaries heavily foxed, else interior very good and sound. Provides sample pages of both the English and German-language editions. Arbour 695 describes a similar item, with the imprint Hurlbut, Williams & Company, 1863.
