Descripción:
[Pulp] Hemingway's novel explores themes of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. Hemingway, Ernest. For Whom The Bell Tolls. New York: Bantam Books, 1956. First edition first printing Bantam mass market paperback pulp. 502 pages. Measures 4.25" x 6.5". Plot follows Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. It was published just after the end of the Spanish Civil War and in 1940 was declared non-mailable by the U.S. Post Office. In 1941, the Pulitzer Prize committee for letters unanimously recommended For Whom the Bell Tolls be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel for that year. The Pulitzer Board agreed. However, Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia University and ex officio head of the Pulitzer board at that time, found the novel offensive and persuaded the board to reverse its determination;… Leer más

Measuring approximately 10" x 6.75" with 498 numbered pages. This book is in good plus condition. Moderate bumping and fading to spine. Moderate staining to both boards and all edges to textblock. Interior pages are bright and clean. Signed by illustrator Lynd Ward on last page of text. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is one of Hemingway's biggest literary triumphs. Written in 1939 and finished in 1940, the first edition was published in October of that year, with a print run of 75,000 copies. The novel was inspired by Hemingway's experiences as a journalist in Spain during its civil war. The plot centers on an American dynamiter who joins forces with an anti-fascist troupe to carry out the detonation of a bridge. What unfolds is a story of bravery, deception, love, and agony. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is certainly one of Ernest Hemingway's… Leer más

First or second copy. Unique typescript of the earlier version of the translation.
The extracts from the novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls", translated into Russian, were scheduled to be published in Znamya magazine in 1941. However, the outbreak of war in June of that year disrupted these plans. Simultaneously, Hemingway faced criticism for the novel and was accused of slander by the Spanish communists. It is believed that Josef Stalin personally read the complete translation of the novel and commented, "Interesting. Printing is forbidden".This original, draft, and pre-proofreading typescript, encompassing the first 18 chapters (with the last chapter lacking an ending), served as the basis for the two-volume edition published in 1962 (without any censorship cuts). This edition was specifically intended for Soviet authorities as part of a special series, marking the first Russian translation of the novel. The series of such books was not intended for distribution through bookstores or libraries. These… Leer más
