Very good. The third and much expanded edition of the narrative which first appeared in 1862 under the title, NOTES BY THE WAY, and one of the best of all Oregon Trail narratives. Hewitt's journey followed, for the most part, a hitherto unknown and dangerous route, from Dundee, Illinois, to St. Joe, then up to Council Bluffs, overland to Laramie, Fort Hall, up to Coeur d'Alene, Spokane Falls, Portland and Olympia. He kept a detailed diary, and this narrative is one of the few substantial accounts of an 1862 crossing.
