Fort McPherson was also known as Fort Cottonwood and was located near North Platte, Nebraska on the North Platte River. It was an Indian Wars era Army fort first occupied in 1863 and built to help protect travelers crossing the plains on the Oregon and California trails. It was abandoned in 1880. The author has prepared a comprehensive history of this fort and the role it played in the Indian wars and western migration. Contains appendices, sources, bibligraphy, and an index in the rear. This copy is the stated "Centennial Edition." Original publisher's gray cloth covers with silver spine lettering and a pictorial cover decoration. This is probably the most complete history of his army fort of which there is now no trace save for a monument on the site.
