Gregg is remembered for his classic account of the Santa Fe Trail, COMMERCE OF THE PRAIRIES, published in 1844. (See Howes G401; Graff 1659; Wagner-Camp 108). He died six years later, and little was known of him until his notebooks, diaries, and letters were published in the 1940's, with a long biographical essay by Horgan. The present volume is a revised edition of that essay, plus an analysis and interpretation of Gregg's only book..
