Blind stamped cloth covers show wear at spine ends, and a little at corners. Gilt stamped lettering on spine remains good. Small sticker of a previous owner is seen on the front paste down. There are just a few small penciled notes on the end leaves as well as some very light soiling. The half title page has been torn from the book. There is a little light foxing seen on plates, and some of the text/ads is a little darkened. . Cloth - Hard Cover. Fair+/No Dust Jacket.

Rubbing, joints splitting. <br><br> At the time Hunter was considered the authority on venereal diseases. He thought that gonorrhea and syphilis were caused by a single pathogen. He inoculated a patient with gonorrhea, using a needle that was unknowingly contaminated with syphilis. When the patient contracted both syphilis and gonorrhea, Hunter claimed it proved his erroneous theory that there was only one venereal disease. He championed its treatment with mercury and cauterization. He included his findings in his Treatise on the Venereal Disease, first issued in 1786. Because of Hunter's reputation, knowledge concerning the true nature of gonorrhea and syphilis was retarded, and it was not until 51 years later that his theory was proved to be wrong. <br> <br> Early signature of G. Original half calf over marbled sides; some wear and rubbing to covers, discreetly rebacked, neat repair to lower portion of plate I (not affecting image). A serviceable copy of this landmark work. The eminent surgeon John Hunter, best known for this treatise on sexually transmitted disease, was a pioneer of experimental pathology and was responsible for the opening of a museum of anatomy in London in which the cutaneous manifestations of syphilis figured prominently. The Royal College of Surgeons sponsors an annual lecture in Hunter's memory.

Second Edition. 4to, viii + pp398 + 7 copperplate engravings and their explanations plus 12 pages of index to rear. Hardcover, no dustjacket. Presumed original binding in full calf leather. The spine has a few cracks, the title label is missing, and gilt decoration has faded. The leather has split down both sides of spine and is separating from boards in places, however the binding is remarkably tight and sound for age. Inside previous contemporary owner's signature on title page. The pages of text are in remarkably clean condition, however there is a little foxing throughout plates and description which appears to be old water damage.
