New York:G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1925. First Edition. hard cover. Good/No jacket. New York:G. P. Putnam's Sons. 1925. 1st edition. xv+290pp. Illustrated with 75 photographs and 2 folding maps. Hardcover. Ex-library with only mark a large stamp, directly over title on title page. Green boards rubbed, soiled and worn, with wear to all edges. Spine ends worn with a tear to the bottom edge. Edge points bumped. Internally, end pages lightly soiled but pages free of previous owners marks or signatures. Paper is slightly age-toned, with an occasional smudge scattered throughout. All plates present as called for. Larger of the folding maps has a small tear where attached. The binding is holding, but cracked at the dedication page (with title page starting to pull away), as well as the rear hinge. Overall, a good solid copy. *Frank Hurley was the Official Photographer of Shackleton's Endurance Expedition.

A nonauthorial gift inscription on the first blank flyleaf reads: "To / Theron T. Chapman / This story of an astounding / adventure is also an interesting/ reminder of the ship loads / of whale meat you and I / have brought up from / South Georgia Island. / G. A. Chapman / Christmas 1937." The text, plates and maps are fine and bright. A very good to near fine copy. Original dark green cloth, lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, photographic endpapers; pp. xvi, 290; 75 photographic plates, 2 maps; a little darkened on spine, cloth mimally marked, else a very good copy, ownership inscription to front fly-leaf. First edition. Hurley accompanied both Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-14) and Shackleton's Imperial Transantarctic Expedition (1914-17), during which time he took some of the most memorable Antarctic photographs of the era. The book has become scarce. Provenance: Brian Birley Roberst was a British polar researcher, ornithologist and instrumental in the development of the Scott Polar Research Institute. In 1934 he had joined he joined the three-year British Graham Land Expedition to the Antarctic led by John Rymill. Spence 615; Renard 768; Rosove 178.A1.
