Quarter bound in light tan with grayish paper boards. Pages unopened(closed at top) and uncut on edges.Clean; No odor; unmarked. Two pages have tears. Folding map in front located between the front paste down and the right front flyleaf. Missing both plans and a part of the Table of distances. Brown calf leather binding with newer red leather title label on the spine. Front and rear hinges repaired at one point leaving the rear fly end paper partially stuck to the rear paste down. Leather boards are scuffed and pitted. Light toning to the text. A few pages are browned. Map of the United States measures 15" x 11.5". The contemporary 18th century map of the United States tipped in front probably was not issued with the book. The original map, engraved by John Cheevers, was 35-1/4" x 43-1/2" in size and issued separately. Late 19th- century three-quarter red morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt with raised bands, t.e.g. Moderate shelf wear. Light tanning, some offsetting, a bit of foxing. Penciled and inked marginalia to the appendix leaves. Folding table with a neat closed split along a lower portion of a fold, confined to the margin. A very good copy. First edition, second issue of this important work by one of America's most influential early geographers. Thomas Hutchins was a seminal figure in the surveying and mapping of the United States. He began his career as a topographical engineer for the British Army during the French and Indian War, and from 1758 to 1777 served in the Ohio Valley, designing the fortifications at Fort Pitt in 1763.
