Black and white illustrations throughout. Contains colour illustrated plates throughout. With thumb index. Clean pages with mild tanning throughout. Mild foxing to endpapers. Tightly bound with mild thumb-marking throughout. Small tears to a few page edges. Mild marking to title page. Notable scuffing to front endpaper. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Notable scuffing to edges. Notable scratching and marking to boards. Minor peeling to label on spine. Recornered and respined.

Rear hinge totally broken on the inner side, joint still sound; front hinge starting. Leather covers missing large surface chips at fore-edge of front, smaller ones to rear, cracks at corners with chips & tears at spine extremities. Board corners bumped and frayed. In original embossed and gilt-titled leather, marbled endpapers. The original was published in 1890, so this is a pretty early example, worthy of repairs. Ships at estimated cost. Funk & Wagnalls Company, New York and London, 1898. 4th Edition. Hardcover. Poor/No Jacket. Two volumes (complete). The reference number refers to BOTH volumes. Both are individually very heavy. Both are fully bound in leather. They are much worn and scuffed all about. Despite wear along the seams, the spines are sure and secure. They have a venerable character and are confident. Within, the contents are much worn and there have been attempts at repair. In general, however, the pages are clear and benign. Thumb tags are sound. Coloured plates are fresh and bright. There are occasional annotations. Both books have a previous owner (Henry William Ellis - dated Jan 1907) signature. With an abridged cyclopaedia and atlas of the world. With 33 coloured maps and 33 plates. Edited by Isaac Kaufmann Funk an American Lutheran minister, editor, lexicographer, publisher and co founder of Funk & Wagnalls Company. This standard Dictionary of the English Language was Funk's most important achievement, the first volume of which was originally published in 1893. His aim was to provide essential information thoroughly and simply at the same time. In cloth bindings with gilt detailing. Externally, smart with rubbing and fading to boards. Hinges strained with front few pages to volume II detached but present. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean with scattered spotting and some patches of heavier foxing. Very Good
