The cover boards have loss of cover material on the edges, the spine of the cover is missing the cover material and the back cover board is barely attached. The covers are therefor in poor condition. All pages and illustrations are secured by the original binding and none are missing. Maps no.1 and no. 2 are laid in at the end of the book. They may have been attached but are not at this time.Overall this is a complete reference copy that needs rebinding. Wonderful and authentic account of exploration of the American West.

In 1857 Ives was named to lead an expedition up the Colorado River in order to develop potential routes of supply in the event of a war between the national government and the Mormon settlements in Deseret (Utah).

The 2 large folding maps with light foxing, otherwise fine with no tears or chips. Original full leather covers with new leather spine. .

4to original cloth with gilt cover vignette, rebacked with modern cloth, leather spine label, illustrated. Some staining and wear to covers, and occasional staining and soiling within. There are some stub tears to the maps, and a few of the folding plates are ill creased. Overall in very good shape and the Indian plates are quite bright. The Ives expedition was the first real study of the Colorado, which had as its main purpose to see to what extent the river was navigable. To accomplish this task, a steamer was made in Philadelphia and shipped in parts to San Francisco, where it was back hauled to Ives in pieces in Colorado. The Streeter catalogue indicates that the “Ives expedition went up the Colorado some 500 miles to the limit of navigation, then continued overland along the river. The expedition disbanded at Albuquerque after transversing some 900 miles.
