UsedGood. 1866 printing. An early biography of Lincoln printed shortly after his death. Brown leather boards with gilt lettering on spine. Book shows considerable age, heavy rubbing and tanning to cover. Spine jacket is cracked and partially hanging, with top 1 cm. missing & binding showing through. Top half of front hinge starting with webbing showing through. Book generally fragile, but intact. Spine cracked, all pages remain, including glassine paper over frontis. Mild spotting and yellowing to page edges. Text clean, no notes or underlining. Overall fair condition, affordable copy of a scarce Civil War-era title.

This vintage treasure has been rebound in sturdy burgundy cloth with the former owner's names in bright gold on the front cover, new end-papers have also been provided, 544 pages + 2 pages of ads, overall, especially considering its age, this is a very clean copy, we note the following flaws: the first original end-paper and the frontis page are damp-marked but the frontis engraving of Lincoln is unaffected except for a small area on his lower arm, the three additional engravings and their protective tissue-guards are foxed but the engravings remain almost entirely unaffected, page 123 has several tan lines caused by a dried flower but the text remains readable, pages 39 and 41 have a carefully placed (and unnecessary) piece of tape along the outer edge, lastly, there are two sections of misplaced pages, pages 513 through 527 follow page 496 and pages 497-512 follow page 496, please note that all of the pages are present, please see our photos .

This copy is from the library of David Herbert Donald , winner of two Pulitzer Prizes for his biographies of Charles Sumner and Thomas Wolfe and celebrated biographer of Abraham Lincoln . Donald has made a few marks in pencil in the text . Both hinges are just beginning to loosen . Light wear to the cloth on the edges of the boards .

Springfiled MA: Gurdon Bill, 1866. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good-. First Edition. Hardcover. An early biography of Lincoln published shortly after his assassination. This set bears the ownership bookplate of the Library Association of Dark Harbor, ME and indicates that it was donated by Mrs. E.P. Kinnicutt, [the Kinnicutt family was important in New England financial cirles and with the American Antiquarian Society. The set was given by his widow to the Dark Harbor Library (an affluent enclave on an island off the coast of Maine) and they bear the bookplate and very discrete marks supporting that. Dark Harbor occupies about 1/4 of the island and is largely occupied by summer 'cottages', the rest of the island is occupied by largely year-around residents. Gilt tiles and rules to spine along with 7 raised bands.544pp. with dark brown EPs and marbled page edges. Frontispiece with tissue guard. Page 1 rendering of the bust of Lincoln with tissue guard. Other drawings with tissue guards as well. Title page is 1866, copyright page is 1865. Two neat PO signatures ..one on FEP, the other on the next page dated June 1876. This copy is VG- . Spine is sunned and moderately worn but gilt is bright and clean. Both top hinges of spine are starting but holding nicely. Tooled boards have minimal rubbing. Edges and spine ends worn. Marbling on page ends is faded. Inside is otherwise unmarked. Pages are somewhat stiff. Moderate to significant foxing throughout.
