A very fine, as new set with matching publisher's slipcase. Includes the new introduction by J. Frank Dobie. "One of the `Big Four' cattle books, and after Freeman's Prose and Poetry, the most important on the subject. The book contains a great wealth of information, and is a cornerstone in any range library ... Supposedly most of the first edition was destroyed in a warehouse fire, hence its rarity today. First Edition. 743 pp. Illustrated with b&w plates (color frontispiece not present, but unclear if it was issued with all copies). Folio, (12¼x9"), full brown leather stamped blind and in gilt, all edges marbled. Expertly rebacked with original spine laid down; lacking frontispiece, pages remarkably clean, with just a few pages with light soiling; very good or better. Inscribed by George W. Conover, whose biography is featured on pp. 661-62. Key text on the history of the cattle industry: "One of the 'big four' cattle books... no collector's library would be complete without it..." - Adams. Adams calls the 1895 first edition "very rare," and notes that nearly all of that edition was lost in a warehouse fire. Jenkins notes that the work was first "conceived as a mug book to be sold primarily to the people whose biographies appeared in it, the final published book contained so much of value on the cattle industry that it has become a classic in its field." Folio. Later calf in matching style, spine gilt, with original front and rear panels laid down, including original gilt-stamped front panel featuring vignette of a longhorn. Marbled edges, portion of original gilt backstrip preserved and laid in. Binder's stamp to rear pastedown, contemporary ownership inscription in pencil to preliminary blank. The color frontispiece, not issued with all copies, is present here. Small closed tear to bottom of pp.299-302, not affecting text. Minimal foxing and soiling, plates with some light foxing. Small tape repair to edge of p.742. Very good. One of the so-called "big four" cattle books, and in our experience, the most difficult to obtain.
