The finely produced plates are after drawings and watercolours by the French artist Jean-Baptiste Debret: his oeuvre documents Brazil in the early decades of the 19th century. While relatively well represented institutionally, Debret's work is commercially scarce. Debret (1768-1848) studied at the French Academy of Fine Arts under the great Jacques-Louis David, travelling to Brazil in 1816 as a member of a French Artistic Mission commissioned by João VI of Portugal. He created an arts lyceum in Rio de Janeiro, the Escola Real de Artes e Ofícios, which later became the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes during the reign of emperor Dom Pedro I.
