Original dark blue cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, publisher's monogram in blind to the front panel, in dustwrapper. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth and gilt fresh, the contents clean throughout. In the dustwrapper, the spine a little toned, nicked to the upper spine tip and corners, with a short tear (c. 0.5 cm) to the upper edge of the rear spine fold. Not price clipped (£12.50 net to the front flap). An attractive copy. Scarce. This was the first volume to be published (but second in the series) in the Clarendon 'Miscellaneous Works of John Bunyan' issued across thirteen volumes between 1976 and 1994. Scarce leather hardcover, 252 pp. Expounds the young Bunyan's two covenant theology (Adam - Old Testament and Jesus - New Testament). Book Condition: Good minus; front cover barely attached, rear cover secured; some foxing throughout and spotting to text block; no text marks; creasing to front free end papers. Other than the separation at the front this book is in good condition for its age with relatively little scuffing to the covers..

Provenance:on leaf a2 "Brown 1742," on rear paste-down beneath two hebrew words "Caleb Cushing... from...friend John Davenport." The first illegible word might be Stamford, the word preceeding John Davenport is illegable. This John Davenport appears to be the grandson of Puritan Divine John Davenport (1637-1672) who arrived in Boston in 1637. .

John Bunyan is perhaps the most important theological writers and preacher of the 17th-century. In addition to his allegorical masterpiece 'The Pilgrim's Progress,' Bunyan wrote dozens of Puritan works and sermons. One of his lesser-known works was "The Doctrine of the Law and Grace Unfolded" – a study of Puritan and Protestant doctrines. In this book, Bunyan describes the Covenant of Works, the new covenant through Christ Jesus, the Covenant of Grace, and even an interesting section of the unpardonable sin!
