Cream cartridge paper between blue paper covers. Title labels pasted on to front boards and spine. Boards rubbed and darkened. Pale blue endpapers. Sixteen pencil drawings (approximately 5 1/2 in. x 4 1/2 in.) by the author. Some called the illustrations "somber"; MacCathmhaoil speaks to that (see below). Joseph Campbell (1879-1944), who wrote under the Gaelic form of his name Seosamh Mac Cathmhaoil, was a poet, playwright, folklorist and political activist "...With regard to the pictures illustrating the book, several people who have seen them in the original have criticised their darkness, as if they were all drawn 'in twilight and eclipse'. But the darkness of Donegal was the first thing that struck me when I crossed the frontier at Lifford, and the forty miles' journey through the hills to Ardara bit the impression still more deeply…

Scarce First Edition of the Irish poet's reminiscences of wanderings about Donegal, beautifully illustrated. 8vo (215 x 169mm): viii,[2],56pp, with 16 full-page plates (including frontispiece) after pencil drawings by the author. Original blue-grey paper-covered boards, paper labels printed in black to spine and front cover, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed, matching blue-grey end papers; attractive Gaelic book plate and Sidney bookseller's ticket to front paste-down. Joints skillfully re-enforced, minor marks to boards, light (occasionally moderate) spotting to pages, else a collectible copy in original binding with both paper labels intact. Text and drawings extracted from the author's notebook. Campbell wrote under the Gaelic form of his name, Seosamh Mac Cathmhaoil. He took part in the Easter Rising of 1916, becoming a Sinn Féin Councillor, in Wicklow, in 1921. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books…
