NO map, frontis, half title or full title page. . Nice reading copy. Full sheep binding with two gilt lettered black leather spine labels stating "ARCTIC EXPLORATIONS" & "VOL. 1". Lettering quite clear. Paper of both inner hinges cracked, tho hinges still sound. Text block tight. No loose pages or sprung signatures. Scuffed & worn covers. Text decent with scattered light aging & foxing BUT all plate margins foxed. This foxing has offset to the adjoining pages. There are 10 pages of notes at end, should be 12, so, last leaf MISSING. Plates & all text pages, but for that very last, collated complete. .

Philadelphia: Childs & Peterson, 1857. Brown cloth covers are scuffed, rubbed, and a little worn. Corners are bumped. The title page in Volume I is detached, though in place. Childs & Peters, 1857 Bound in faded brown cloth,, 464 and 467 pp. A clean solid set but with a damp stain to the spines, primarily to Volume I. There are two title pages with the first being engraved. Frontispieces, tissue guards and first [engraved title pages foxed]. Also, mostly in Vol I the engravings have foxed borders affecting the tissue guards and facing pages. Volume II has light foxing to some of the plates. Map in volume I clean, bright, tight and free of tears or stains. But for the foxing, internally very good.

Sailing ship vignette stamped on all covers. . Each vol with a frontis and an additional engraved tp. Vol 1 also with a fold out map & a single page map, plus 11 tissue guarded plates. Vol 2 with a fold out chart of Baffin bay isothermal lines and 7 plates. All tips bumped & worn to underlying board. spine ends chipped & frayed. Vol 2 inner hinge paper cracking, hinges still sound. Vol 2 scattered light foxing. Attachment areas of both fold outs torn, now repaired with archival tissue. There is no list of illustrations with names, numbers or page numbers. This was not done till the later 1 vol edition. A copy of the list from a 1 vol edition is included.. .

Both volumes in this two volume set are in very good- condition in original, brown cloth covered boards with blind embossing on the boards and gilt text stampings on the spines. The cloth for both volumes show rubbing and wear to the spines with the cloth worn through at the heads and heels of the spines and there are a number of chips to the cloth on the spine of volume II. Both are octavos measuring 8 3/4" by 5 3/4" with the engraved title pages and frontispieces showing foxing. The rest of the text is essentially free of any foxing or tanning. The binding, hinges and joints are all tight and strong. "Illustrated with up to 300 engravings from sketches by the author." [from the title page] Both volumes contain the fold out maps. The map for volume I is located at the front of the book and the map for the second volume faces page 428. Both maps are in fine condition.

(Grinnell Land is the central section of Ellesmere Island in the northernmost part of Nunavut territory in Canada. It was named for Henry Grinnell, a shipping magnate from New York, who helped finance two expeditions in the 1850s to search for Franklin's lost expedition.) A very good set in publisher's 3/4 calf and marbled boards. Small closed tear to the top of the spine of volume 1, 3 maps, 2 folding plus tissue guards on steel engravings. A very good set
