Ttitle page printed in red and black. 356 pp. Illustrated with photographic plates. A tight, very good example, small owneship signature top edge front free endpaper, shallow wear at the foot of the spine. The author's first book, based on hius journalistic experiences during and just after World War I, an account of the reasons which caused Central Europeans to emmigrate to America, Russians to rush to Constantinople, Greek royalty and comoners to leave their land, and, interestingly, why the English and Scottish "emigrate" to pubs at night.

VG hardback missing the scarce dust jacket, but with an author-signed bookplate. 356 p. illus. 22 cm. In addition to the frontispiece there are 13 leaves of coated stock with pictures printed on both sides. Roberts' second book, drawn from articles he wrote on immigration and events in Europe for "The Saturday Evening Post." The standard Roberts bibliographies report there were only 2,011 copies of the first edition printed. Note: I have a large selection of Kenneth Roberts books and related materials. Text block is unmarked, with the exception of a note in the gutter on p. 3 ("16718 - Jan. 1923"); the pages are slightly tanned from age. First edition of this exceedingly scarce second work by Kenneth Roberts, and his first as sole author. He provides a detailed and gripping account of the immigration problem before, and especially after World War I as Central Europeans, and Eastern European Jews, poured into the United States, overwhelming local governments, cities, and charities. In addition, he examines the Russian emigration into Turkey following the Russian Revolution, examines the Greek Civil War, and the struggle against Temperance in Scotland and England.

A small octavo measuring 8" by 5 1/4" with mild age tanning to the recto and verso of the frontispiece and to the title page and with a crease to the cloth down the middle of the spine. This is one of several binding variants for this title. Without its issued dust jacket. 356 pages of text. This is Roberts' second book which is quite difficult to locate as reportedly only 2,011 copies of the first edition were published. 356 pages of text and illustrated with a few black and white photographs. Hardcover with dustjacket, no date on title page, 1922 date on copyright page, sturdy and attractive burgundy cloth with bright gold title on spine, illustrated with photos, there are several gently corner-creased pages, page 19 and 356 have small pieces missing at the edges from being opened carelessly (no loss of text) . Two small dark smudges that appear to be printer's ink on page 156 have partially obscured a few words of text but all is still readable, mild tanning to the blank end-papers, tiny crease to the top rear corner, the book remains pleasing to the eye, the binding is tight, square and clean and with the exception of page 156 the contents are fine, please see our photos of the scarce jacket to determine whether suitable for your needs, there are some brown blemishes on the underside of the jacket, the original price (3.00) is present and a professional (removable) mylar cover is included, subtitled… Leer más

First edition in dark maroon cloth It is believed to have been Robert's personal copy, autographed on front fly leaf in ink "Kenneth L Roberts, Kennebunk Beach, July 28, 1926" and annotated with pencil comments on several pages as well as inked comments on the rear endpaper and rear board adjacent to pasted newspaper clippings There is no documented provenance for this belief, but the annotations appear in the same hand as the author's signature, and the nature of the comments appears authorial More research would be needed to confirm this however, so I am only offering this copy as a signed book, not necessarily the author's own This was Roberts' first book, based on his journalistic experiences during and just after World War I For those of us who grew up reading his many thrilling and thoroughly researched historical fiction works, such as Arundel, Northwest Passage and Oliver Wiswell, it is disappointing to find in… Leer más
