Andrew Lang's Fairy Books are a series of twenty-five collections of true and fictional stories for children, published between 1889 and 1913. The Blue Fairy Book, first published in 1889, was the first volume in the series and so it contains some of the best known tales, taken from a variety of sources. It assembled a wide range of tales, with seven from the Brothers Grimm, five from Madame d'Aulnoy, three from the Arabian Nights, and four Norwegian fairy tales, among other sources.

A Good Copy of this book in publisher's original decorated and gold gilt embossed dark blue hardcover cloth boards, with gilt title lettering to spine and with faded/rubbed gilt decoration to spine, and gilt illustration of a wizard to the front cover. The book has maintained it's original black endpapers. There are no names or other details of previous owners inside. . All the page edges of the book are in gilt (AEG) , but the gilt is wearing thin in places. The Cloth at the ends of the spine has started to fray - see picture on abe or our own website at peakirkbooks. The cover corners are also worn , with the cloth splitting and the card just peeping through. There is a small closed tear, approx 1 cm, on the title page. Only four of the titles (Blue, Red, Green, and Yellow) from the series of 12 were issued in this deluxe format. The Blue Fairy Book was immediately successful, and the series effected a seismic shift in the public's taste for fairytales. Unprecedented in the international scope of its sources, the success of the series also owes much "to the devoted work of their illustrator, who... provided a benchmark in fantasy illustration" (Grolier).
