Red quarter cloth with gilt titles to spine and marbled paper-covered boards with printed white title panel to upper board; housed in matching plain red cloth-covered slipcase. Signed by John Le Carre to title page. A Fine copy in like slipcase. The first 3 chapters of the classic espionage tale, produced in a special edition dedicated to children living with HIV/Aids. Scarce.

The Book Club issue of the first American edition. 8vo. 256pp. Quarter black cloth with grey sides, lettered in gold at the spine and with the author's facsimile signature gold-stamped to the base of the upper board (the correct first edition binding is red backstrip cloth, not black). Publisher's orange top edge stain, very slightly faded. A narrow trace of light toning to the free endpapers and a little light spotting to the fore edge. Retail price sticker to the tip of the front free endpaper (which I have not attempted to remove). A very good copy in the later state Book Club issue dust wrapper, repeating the original design, but with four quotes to the rear panel instead of three, no price printed to the head of the front flap, but the base of the flap clipped (where the original Book Club identifier should be found). Original grey cloth with red lettering to spine. A couple of small knocks to bottom corners of boards, else fine in a fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing to the bottom corner of upper panel. An excellent copy.

Sporadic spotting to the prelims. In an gently faded wrapper which is not price clipped and has a couple of internal repairs to the spine. A little creasing and chipping here and there. Accompanied by the wrap-around band (with famous quote from Graham Greene and a lobby card, written by Le Carre (in a jocular fashion), 'it really was a/delightful evening/David Cornwell/Secretary of the John/Le CarreFan Club/. Rare with these attributes.
