Clean, tight condition internally but for two ex-lib. stamps (St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie, NY) on title page. With an old, faint damp stain to the upper outer page edges through about page 50. Most of the spine is missing, and there is age wear and soiling to covers. The back cover is detached but present.. Tan tooled leather/boards with Greek key motif around edges. Darker leather at spine with gilt delineation lining and borders. Gilt decoration at spine (but nearly all of spine leather is missing). Marbled page edges and end papers. This dictionary, published for the first time in 1718 and in several subsequent editions, "contains a great deal of material on the vulgar language of the 17th century." (Zaunmüller, 142) . 1735. Lyon, Beringo, 1735. 8vo. In a nice contemporary Cambridge-style mirror binding with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Super ex-libris to front board and ex-libris pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. Vague marginal dampstain but overall a nice copy. (4), 668 pp. Later expanded edition of Le Roux's popular dictionary on proverbs originally published in 1718. Le Roux was forced to flee from France to Belgium after publishing a biography critical of François de la Chaise, French Jesuit priest, and confessor of King Louis XIV of France.
