The title page is a cancel; a reissue of Hogg's edition of [1794] without the advertisement on the verso of p.357. Contemporary sheep, contrasting red calf lettering-piece. Rubbed and marked, some surface loss to upper board and spine. Recent book-label of J. F. Fuggles to FEP, contemporary inked ownership inscription of M. Lodge to recto of FFEP, a trifle toned. A revised edition of Scottish poet Tobias Smollett's (1721-1771) translation of Alain Rene Le Sage's (1688-1747) influential picaresque novel. Smollett's masterful adaptation of the text first appeared in 1748; of the 3000 copies printed fewer than 400 remained unsold after four months. The work would reach it's tenth edition by 1790. Woodward at the Dove in Pater-Noster-Row, MDCCXLI (1741) This copy was hand-bound and cased by Robert Smith in New York circa 1890 in half brown Morocco, ruled in Gilt, with marbled boards. 6 compartments with extra Gilt. the Title in Gilt on a red label and date in Gilt on lower spine. All edges dye'd red, plus a silk cord marker sewn in. Marbled endpapers. 294pp Some scattered light foxing here and there. Very tight, fine binding. pictures will be available..

Originally published in 1735, Alain-Rene Lesage's "Adventures of Gil Blas" is a picaresque novel dealing with the life of Gil Blas, a true 'rags to riches' story. It is considered one of literature's first realistic novels.

This rare 1778 edition was translated into English from the French of M. de La Sage, to which is prefixed an account of the author's life illustrated with copper plates.

Gilt-blocked leather labels to spines, with gilt-crossed raised bands and spine compartments uniformly tooled in gilt. Gilt-stamped and blind-tooled borders to panels. Inner gilt dentils. Some surface scratches and scuffs to panels. Spine bands and panel edges somewhat dulled and rubbed as with age. Bright and clean internally, with light marginal age toning, although there is some foxing around the plates. Each volume contains a previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown, and signature on blank prelim. leaf. Remains quite well-preserved overall.
