Purported to be the first American catalogue with a focus on first editions, it includes a preface by booksellers Leon & brother, explaining why the first edition of a literary figure is important.

The first bookseller's catalogue devoted exclusively to first editions of American authors. The firm of Leon and Brother is something of a mystery. The brothers are originally believed to have come from Spain. It is doubtless that the catalogue, printed on fine paper, was expensive to produce and must have been issued in a reasonably large edition for it is not uncommon today. The year after this catalogue appeared, a sale of their stock was held at C.F. Libbie & Co. in Boston, and the Leons seemed to have disappeared.

Thoreau, and Tuckerman. "A hopeful sign of future book-collecting is exhibited in the fact that Bibliophiles of America are emulating their brethren of the Old World in placing upon their shelves first editions. . . Believing that, in offering this catalogue, the compilers are supplying a want which is generally felt among American Collectors, they trust that due indulgence will be made for errors."  (788).

A landmark in the history of American bookselling. The compiler was Francis Leon, a Polish refugee who opened his shop in 1884. "The publication was such an event that the publishers issued the catalogue not only in an ordinary edition (as here), but also in a deluxe large paper edition on Whatman paper" (Blanck, Papers of the Biblio. Soc., vol. 36, no. 2).
