Six color lithographs present, with tissue guards present but often merely laid in. Snag to glassine at foot of spine.

Original white wrappers. In original slipcase and chemise. Illustrated by Laurencin with 6 magnificent tissue-guarded color plates with facsimile signatures. Printed on Rives paper. 114 pages. Wrappers moderately foxed, with some light marginal foxing to text. Case scuffed and and repaired; chemise repaired and joints, with part of tan paper overlay worn away on spine. Plates bright.

Paris: The Black Sun Press,, 1930. Stunningly illustrated and preserved First Black Sun Press edition, an extranumerary copy of the deluxe European issue, lettered "F", signed by the artist on the colophon, and with a supplementary suite of the illustrations in sanguine, of which five are signed by Laurencin in purple pencil, as issued. The colophon, which states that 20 numbered copies of this deluxe issue were released in Europe, does not mention lettered copies. This was the first illustrated book of the foremost French artist Marie Laurencin (1883-1956), whose celebrated queer illustrations are "characterized by a palette of pastel colours and feminine subject matter" (Summers, p. 208). Producing Alice in this aesthetic caused "a considerable shock to those brought up on Tenniel" (Tebbel, p. 625). Complete set of six colored pastel drawings for this unusual Art Deco vision of ALICE, being the actual finished originals made by MARIE LAURENCIN inside a set of black and white outline designs printed as proofs on wove paper. Her original outlines would have been made directly on lithographic stones for printing whereas this manuscript series was prepared for the printers to create color-separation plates (which explains why the color-printed images in the book do not precisely match the published drawings).
Each picture is signed by the artist in colored pencil, with page size measuring 10-7/8 x 14-1/4 inches.

Together with: 6 canceled outline proofs from the printer E Desjobert, signed and dated "October 1930", with their printers' stamp. These measure 9-3/4 x 11-7/8 inches on tinted BFK wove paper.
