Two short issues of this newspaper, containing several lengthy articles and shorter briefs on the Civil War. This includes a printing of the May 3rd proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln increasing the size of the army and navy; reports from Washington, Missouri and Arkansas; report on General Houston in Texas and his speech; an African-American view of the crisis; an alleged plot to burn Boston, New York and Philadelphia, etc. FAIR/GOOD condition. Heavy chipping, tearing and creasing along the extremities, with minor loss, sometimes affecting text. Heavy browning. Scattered foxing, soiling and staining. Horizontal and fold creases present, as well as other creases. Text hard to read in a few places due to creasing.

All material is copied type script on the front sides of the paper. First speech is titled "The Intellectual Lincoln - A Preliminary Assessment. Address Read Before the Lincoln-Civil War Society, February 10, 1973". It is 10 pages long and signed Manuel Kean at the end. Second address is 7 pages and titled "First Lecture on Discoveries and Inventions [April 6, 1858]. [Source material taken from "Basler, Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, 1953, ii, pp. 437-42]. Third address is 8 pages and titled "Second Lecture on Discoveries and Inventions [February 11, 1859] (Basler: pages 356-63). Following this address are copies of typed letters to William M. Morris and Thomas J. Picket (Basler - page 374 and page 377). Washington, D.C., April 1861.. [1]p. on a folded folio sheet of "Thirty- Sixth Congress House of Representatives" illustrated letterhead. Plus integral blank, docketed and with a four-line note in an unknown hand on the fourth page, as well as Lincoln's signature and five-line autograph endorsement. Two old horizontal folds. One small nick to right edge of both leaves, small contemporary ink stains. Near fine. An excellent Lincoln signature and autograph endorsement from the earliest days of the Civil War, on an interesting letter relating the efforts to keep the U.S.S. Constitution from falling into Confederate hands. Commander Timothy Monroe of the 8th Massachusetts Militia Regiment writes President Lincoln on a piece of House Representatives letterhead, with a manuscript date of "April, 1861." Monroe relates "that the troops under his command, have by the most severe labor, in rescuing the Frigate Constitution from the hands of the secessionists, and by repairing the Rail Road from Anapolis… Leer más
