This work is famed for its well written prose and its confident emphasis on a progressive model of British history. It is quite the Whig interpretation of history. The work covers from 1685-1702 and encompasses the reigns of James II, the Glorious Revolution, the co-regency of William and Mary until William III's death. In uniform half calf bindings. Rebacked, with original boards and backstrips preserved. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the spines and some loss to the original backstrip at spine labels. Further patches of light rubbing to the extremities and to the paper covered boards. Evidence of a sticker being removed to the front board of volume II. Three quarter tan calf over marbled boards, slightly raised spine bands, gilt decorated compartments, marbled edges and endpapers. Some light shelfwear and rubbing, spine labels nearly or completely chipped off of each volume, good hinges, sound text blocks, clean pages free from names or other markings. A clean set, quite attractive even with the label chipping.. Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

'A History of England' was first published in 1848. It begins in 1685 and covers the history of England until 1702, encompassing the reign of James II, the Glorious Revolution, the coregency of William and Mary, and concludes at William III's death.Macaulay's approach to this work was considered innovative. He utilised the dramatic style of classic historians whilst incorporating the factual approach of his eighteenth century precursors, such as Hume.Retaining the original half titles.In tree calf prize bindings, with the prize bookplate of Hartlepool's Henry Smith School, dated 1895, to each front pastedown. Contemporary black full morocco for King's College London, with gilt titles and decoration to spines, and a large gilt college crest to upper of each volume. All edges gilt; yellow-coated endpapers. Prize plate to front pastedown of volume I, dated 1879. Spotting to endpapers and preliminaries. Black ink ownership to first blank of volume II. Some wear to binding extremities, carefully re-coloured. Very good.

All edges gilt, and marbled endpapers with gilt dentelle to turn-ins. Prize plate to front pastedown of each volume, dated 1888. Lovely clean copies internally, though rather small print. Toning to spines, with much colour lost from the labels. Light general wear to bindings. Very good.
