Original publisher's full purple cloth with blind stamped decorative "L" on the front cover, double lined black border and beveled edges, similiar design on spine. Spine has darkend front handling with fraying of the clotth at the top and a flap pulled away, minor chipping down below, binding is loose with the stringers visible between sections of the text block. Recent maroon morocco, an excellent copy. The last major work of Lyell's life, it was coloured by the publication of Darwin's "Origin of Species" four years earlier. Lyell couldn't bring himself to champion the new theories, and his impartial overview of the competing theories in the later chapters disappointed Darwin, although he admitted "The whole... struck me as a compilation, but of the highest quality, for when possible the facts have been verified on the spot..." Near Fine or better, pages clean and fresh (barring mild foxing of first and final few leaves), binding tight and square (after expert and almost imperceptible restoration). Blue-green embossed & decorated publisher’s cloth, gilt illustration on front cover, gilt lettering on spine (minor rubbing head & foot of spine, very minor shelfwear & rubbing to corners), still a VG bright copy, from the library of Edward Robeson Taylor (1838-1928), former mayor of San Francisco, w/ his bookplate on front pastedown & ownership inscription for Sacramento City, Sept. 16, 1867. Second American edition of Lyell’s groundbreaking work on the evolution of man which explored the prehistoric existence of humans before and through the previous ice age, and expounded on Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection which had thrown the Victorian Era into controversy just four years before. He presents much prehistoric evidence, including the skull found at Neanderthal indicating that man had evolved over centuries.

This is the British geologist’s third great work, which went through three editions in one year. “In this he gave a general survey of the arguments for man’s early appearance on the earth derived from the discoveries of flint implements in post-Pliocene strata in the Somme valley and elsewhere; he discussed also the deposits of the Glacial epoch, and in the same volume he gave in his adhesion to Darwin’s theory of the origin of species.” (Encyc. Brit., 11th Edn.) Lyell was a close personal friend of Darwin and was one of the first scientists to support the Origin but he had trouble accepting natural selection as the main motive force in evolution on religious grounds.
