No signatures or bookplates, no library markings present. The only evidence of handwriting found in the book is along the top edge of the front end page where an inscription was written in pencil and then later erased.

Westerfield's signature also appears on the frontispiece verso and the title page. The cloth shows mild edgewear with faint fraying at the head and heel of the spine. The jacket, now in mylar, is edgeworn and torn, with chips at the corners and top edge of the front panel; it also lacks the top 1/3 of the spine. Hinges solid; text clean and unmarked. A facsimile reprint of the 1930 first edition with a new introduction and an apologia by Carol A. Jensen. Marsh was a graduate of Harvard, first schoolmaster in Minnesota, supposed author of a dictionary and grammar of the Sioux language, Indian agent, traded furs, storekeeper, over the Santa Fé Trail to California, practiced as the first doctor in California (Los Angeles, 1836), cattle baron, etc. As a physician, Marsh's fees (mainly in cattle hides) allowed him to buy, from José Noriega, Los Médanos rancho near Mt. Diablo. Marsh became a well-to-do cattle rancher, married the daughter of a Massachusetts minister, built a great stone house (1856) for his wife and their daughter, and was eventually murdered leaving a vast fortune hidden, still undiscovered.
