A reading copy with backstrip gone and parts of super visible at head and heel of spine, covers worn including heavy wear and loss at edges and corners, page edges tanned and soiled, foxing and soiling to endpapers and first and last few leaves, page corners bumped, maps both have a couple of tears, one map bumped and creased at corners. Lacks both maps--this is essentially a reading copy. Lacks the spine & 1 page of the table of contents. The front cover is detached, the rear cover is attached. The pages have scattered foxing, but are completely readable. The full page plates have age toning (no tissue guards were included by the publisher for this book). This is a reading copy, complete in original, functional binding, of survivor Lynch's narrative of this wildly impractical, "exploration" junket to the Holy Land.

This narrative by the Commander of the expedition has been extensively revised from the 1849 first edition, with additions to the text. With two folding maps in fine condition. Bound in quarter green leather and marbled boards with gilt titles and raised bands. Spot touch-up of leather color by conservator; mild rubbing to edges; internally fine and tight. A solid, well preserved copy in bright spine gilt.

Quite a nice copy of this account of an important expedition to the Middle East conducted in 1847. This edition has several additions, and several errors corrected from the first impression. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1850. William Francis Lynch commanded this, the first expedition that determined the Dead Sea to actally be below sea level in elevation. In 1861 he resigned his US commission and joined the Confederate navy. First published in May 1849; this is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the "Seventh Edition, Revised" from a year later, reflecting changes and corrected errors made in November of 1849. Brown pubblisher's cloth binding, decoratively stamped on both covers, with the front filled with gilt.Clean text; xx, 509 pages, with a 42-page (!) catalog in the rear; illustrated with engravings. Present are the two fold-out maps; both have tears and the first one is fragile, barely attached. Generally an excellent textblock, bright and subtle; some spotting mostly in the front pages, light throughout. There is evident wear: corners are bumped to a fray. Maps are all attached in varying condition with closed and open tears. Text block shows minor age toning. Pages display light foxing/spotting throughout.

Two maps and multiple illustrations, all in very good condition. Clean, unmarked pages, no foxing. Bound in contemporary leather, somewhat worn. Covers in good shape, with only slight bumping, gold gilt spine lettering and imprint on front cover. Back cover looks like it was imprinted as well, but the gilt is missing. Binding is in excellent shape. Ships daily. Captain William Francis Lynch, commander of the 1847 USN expedition to the Dead Sea, wrote this chronicle of the journey upon his return to the United States. A native Virginian, he later served in the Confederate Navy, but he was repatriated to the United States after the American Civil War.

Lieutenant William Francis Lynch (1801-1865), describes a successful American government expedition made in 1848; the first to examine the shores of the Dead Sea and sound its depths. In 1852, Lynch authored an official U.S. Government report on the same expedition and during the Civil War served in the Confederate navy. Members of the Expedition are listed.

Maps in very good condition. <br> Sailing on behalf of the United States Naval Hydrographic Office, Lynch's expedition was the first to determine that the Dead Sea was below sea level, something that the scientific community had inferred but not previously determined conclusively, though several other expeditions by Europeans had attempted to do so. This is an oversized or heavy book, that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.

An handsome copy of the U.S. Navy's first foray into the Holy Land, over which young Lynch and his men hauled their boats with camels to the Sea of Galilee, then down the River Jordon to the Dead Sea. er. This copy has repairs on the verso of the map folds, and a few small chips at the edges. The expedition also visited Smyrna and Constantinople.
