New Harmony, Indiana: printed at the School Press, 1831. First edition, second issue; 2 volumes in 1, large 8vo, pp. [4], 480; 481-640; uncut; original brown cloth-backed boards, printed paper label on spine; cloth cracked along the joints, the whole a bit shaken; some toning of the text; a good copy. The text in the first issue ends on p. 592; in this second issue the text ends at 640, ending there in the middle of a sentence. A third volume appeared in 1838. Maclure came from Scotland to America about 1789, to become one of America's pioneer geologists. Early in the 19th century he set out on travels to make the first geological map of the United States which he published in 1817. In 1819 he purchased a large tract of land in Spain to establish an agricultural school. When the land was seized by the Church he turned to Robert Owen with his scheme for the projected colony at New Harmony. Text ends mid-sentence at end of Vol. 2, though the third volume did not appear until 1838 and is treated as bibliographically separate. Good+, minor and major foxing depending on the page. 3/4 black leather with marbled boards and 4-raised bands with gilt title (Volume 1), 3/4 tan leather with gilt tooled lines and "Maclures Opinions" title on each volume (Volumes 2 and 3). All three volumes have the name "S. Merry" gilt stamped at the base of the spine. Volume 1: ffep, title-page, NOTICE sheet with errata, pp. 1-483 including Index at rear. Volume 2: 2 blanks, title-page with date 1837, Advertisement, 3-page Index, followed by pages 1-556. Volume 3: Dated 1838, iv (Index), pp. 9-320 pp. (page 9 begins with words "from the oppression" pages either 1-8 or [v]-8 do not appear to be removed, and thus is lacking the one signature. A mystery of this otherwise phenomenal set is what is going on with the missing pages from volume 3.
