The play was dedicated to Frances Waldegrave, who was a theatre enthusiast who hosted many parties at her home in Nuneham. Monckton translated and adapted the dialogue from Alfred De Musset's proverb 'il faut q'une porte soit ouverte ou fermee', which roughly translates to 'a door must be open or closed'.
