No markings, hnges fine, some rubbing to cover corner tips and spine extremiies, slight toning of page edges, Very Good copy; no dust jacket possibly as published. Dark blue cloth, with title in gold, black spine titles in gold, cover has bevelled edges, 384pp, of which the first 271pp are Maria Monk and the last 100pp or so are The Nun or Six Months Residence in a Convent. Frontispiece entitled The Confessional; The Superior Guarding the Nuns (facing page 81); The Torture Chamber (facing page 96); a double spread on The Iron Maiden,(following page 152); Frontis "Nuns Kissing the floor'. This sensational account in which a nun writes about her abuse at the Hotel Dieu Nunnery in Montreal has been largely discredited as anti-Catholic propaganda. [ 1.5 JM HOQ 102/b2. Hardcover. London: Unknown That book again, in which Maria tells all and considerably more, reprint on cheap and nasty paper as is appropriate, undated but probably 1880-1900, 12mo, 384pp; really two books in one since the latter part comprises Rebecca Theresa Reed's Six Months' Residence in a Convent; two salacious delights for the price of one and most popular on the railway stalls, line frontis + photo illustrations of a dubious nature (Iron Maiden, Torture Chamber and so on) a few general marks to boards, previous owner's name/address front pastedown, front inner paper hinge cracked; however, given that it was hardly a high-point in book production, survived very well, VG Copy. Reprint. Decorative Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Green buckram with gilt titles and embossed decoration to front and spine, Heavy foxing to end papers and prelims and title pages age toned. and with fading to edges of all pages. Otherwise clean throughout with secure binding. A very good copy of this work Maria Monk's, now largely credited as being fictitious, account of abuse in a Roman Catholic convent first published in 1836, added to which is included Rebecca Reed's account of her six months living in a Convent which was published a year earlier. Both of these accounts caused a furore throughout America and Canada when published and at the time Monk's book was more popular than Uncle Tom's Cabin.

The book quickly became a best seller and was published in many different editions across the world. NO DATE but circa 1836/1860s? . An attractive early UK copy in azure blue cloth boards with blind stamped decoration, with the title 'Maria Monk' in a gilt border to the spine, and a gilt vignette religious (Nun and child? ) illustration to the front board. A little rubbed to all extremities, and corners a little 'soft', but no damage. A slight lean to the book. Clean and sound. Internally No Inscriptions, but the odd light mark /spots - mainly to the blank margins. Pale lemon endpapers, somewhat discoloured with age.
