Looking into the rights of claim of both Virginia and the United States to the western territory by Thomas Paine, with some outlines of a plan for laying out a new State, to be applied as a fund, for carrying on the war, or redeeming national debt. Originally written in 1780. Thomas Paine was an English born American Founding Father, political activist and theorist, philosopher. Among his many important works are highly influential pamphlets 'Common Sense' (1776) and 'The American Crisis' (1776-1783), at the start of the American Revolution, and he played an important part on inspiring the Patriots to declare independence from Great Britain in 1776.  Unbound. First British edition of Paine's controversial pamphlet, published nearly two decades after the first American edition of 1780. "When Virginia claimed the territory now known as West Virginia for herself, Paine immediately wrote and published [PUBLIC GOOD], in which he argues that the territory, having been won through the joint effort of the thirteen states, should benefit all. Naturally, this did not endear him to Virginia, and later, when the legislature of that state was asked to recompense Paine for his wartime activities, it refused to do so" - Gimbel. Paine argued that the unsettled west should be "a national fund for the benefit of all," and insisted that his views were not influenced by the fact that he owned 300 shares in the Indiana Company, which stood to profit if Virginia's claims were disallowed.… Leer más

First published in 1780 and reprinted in "The Writings of Thomas Paine", published in 1792 by the same publishing house, with the same signed gatherings. It seems likely that as Virginia relinquished its claims in 1792, a separate printing of this particular pamphlet was struck off for those particularly interested in the issue. Institutionally relatively common, but scarce in trade
