Hardcover issued without dust jacket, 8vo., Volume II only of a two-volume set; bound in publisher's dark green cloth lettered and decorated in gilt; 486 pages with seven folding maps and other illustrations, including an engraved frontis portrait of the general. Front hinge repaired, text toned throughout, a few tears to maps, covers a bit rubbed with some shelf-wear, else good overall condition. NOT EX-LIBRARY.

No markigns, repair to the front hinge, several light small spots to bottom portion of fornt cover, a bit of rubbing to the cover corner tips. Good only use copy: no dust jacket perhaps as published. Green cloth, gold titles with image of Sheridan on a horse, tan patterned end papers, xi, 486pp, index, Frontis portrati and 8 B&W illus; 14 maps, some are fold-out (the large one facing page 26 has a tear in it). Philip Henry Sheridan was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. Despite its heft, the binding is tight and square. Very light rubbing at the corners and spine ends, small p.o. bookplate.

Clean texts; Volume One is 500 pages, with a frontis portrait; Volume Two is xi, 486 pages. Indexed, and with a frontis portrait. Marbled endpapers. Owner signature on the second FEP and bookplate on the front paste-down; signature also in Volume Two. Unfortunately, these books have been ill-treated in some way, with the result that the covers, while present, have been detached. Please note the condition issues. Quercus must offer these books as Binding Copies, in need of restoration or repair. A very good clean unmarked set over 120 years old with four general's stars inlaid on each spine and all maps and illustrations of the period. This would light up any Civil war book shelf!.

Age darkening to pages, upper edges soiled, dampstained; light foxing to other edges. Some signatures starting to both volumes, however, bindings are still sound.

Square, tight and clean throughout with strong joints, no foxing and little if any toning. There is a previous owner's signature and date that has been covered up with a marker on the front end-paper of each volume. Some fairly mild wear to spine ends and tips. Spotting to the cloth, mostly on volume II. A pleasing set. Not perfect, but solid and collectable and at a great price.
