First ed. but not bound in calf as pictured and not signed by author or anyone else; the black cloth boards have identical bright gilt stamped ornamentation and in small lettering at base of front board is printed: "S. Moore, Binder, Philadelphia." These boards are quite scuffed and bumped and spine panel is peeling with small portion at base missing; gilt edges are dulled. 322 p., clean and unmarked except for "No.182" written in calligraphic hand at upper margin of paste-down; includes at back 6 p. of "Valuable Books Recently Published by Carey & Hart, Philadelphia;" followed by 6 blank pages that have large stains at lower corner, followed by 2 end pages that are clean. As this book begs for rebinding (the front gutter is cracked as well) these pages could be replaced. Includes 8 beautiful full-page engravings, some with tissue guards. A collection of 32 short stories including "William Wilson" by Edgar Allan Poe (25pp), and "Deacon Enos" by Harriet Beecher Stowe (44pp). Black morocco, elaborately gilt. Hinges very rubbed, and plates rather foxed. Spine chipped and inner front hinge cracked. Few marginal pencillings, but generally a good copy. All edges gilt.

Contains 'William Wilson' p.229-253, first appearance of Poe's short story inspired by his formative years on the outskirts of London which Poe deemed to be one of his "best tales", with seven others. (Quinn 430). William Wilson is a short story which late became a famous film in the 1960's under the title Spirits of the Dead starring Brigitte Bardot and Alain Delon. But for the missing plate, a close to Fine copy and uncommon as such. Original embossed black morocco with gilt lettering on the spine. Illustrated title page and 7 (of 8) steel engravings with tissue guards by various artists. BAL 992 and 16130. The first appearance in print of this important story by Poe.

Black boards with titling and elaborate decoration in gilt; boards scuffed and edgeworn, frayed to corners, front outer hinge starting and rear outer hinge split at top 3.5 inches. Inner hinges strong; gutter cracked at page two, with the exposed threads of the binding secure; binding sound through text. Endsheets tanned, pencil markings to RFEP with bleedthrough to previous page. Pages bright, occasionally foxed; text else unmarked.

Contains the first printed appearance of Poe's *William Wilson* on pp. 229-253. Contemporary black morocco with an elaborate decorative design stamped in gold on both boards and spine, cream yellow endpapers, all edges gilt. Small early owner's name in ink on front free endpaper. Edges of the boards and corners lightly rubbed, the title page and engraved plates are foxed, a few gatherings slightly sprung, good or better. Internally mostly clean but for staining to the title page, occasional foxing mostly to pages near the engravings, as often the case with this title; 1908 owner name on front endpaper. Covers fairly tight, though there is a two-inch split at the bottom of the front joint; large chip at the top of the spine. Still Very Good. Original highly gilt-decorated polished calf, a lovely publisher's gift binding. BAL 4024 & 16143. The first appearance in print of this classic Poe piece collected the same year in his TALES. Other first appearances include Longfellow (BAL 12074) and Emerson (BAL 5202). Illustrated with 8 engravings, mostly by J. Cheney and J. I. Pease, including one titled "Washington Crossing the Alleghany" by R. W. Dodson.

First book appearance of Edgar Allan Poe's "Manuscript Found in a Bottle," first published in 1833 as the winner of a story contest in the pages of The Baltimore Daily Visiter, and later collected in Poe's 1840 Tales of the Grotesque. Poe's chilling tale of a trapped sailor drifting toward the South Pole is a classic of American horror: "a curiosity to penetrate the mysteries of these awful regions predominates even over my despair, and will reconcile me to the most hideous aspect of death. It is evident that we are hurrying onwards to some exciting knowledge, -- some never-to-be-imparted secret, whose attainment is destruction." In addition to Poe, this Philadelphia gift annual features work by Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Washington Irving, Lydia Sigourney, Samuel Griswold Goodrich, and William Gilmore Simms, and is edited by "Miss Leslie." Brown boards with titling and elaborate decoration in gilt, with age-soil, heavy shelf-wear and edgewear, including minor loss to spine. Gilt textblock edges, the gilt rubbed and a little dulled. Rear inner hinge split; binding cracked following the first fly leaf; gutter between front paste down and FFEP has been glued. Exposed threads are secure, the binding otherwise intact with no loose or missing pages. Pages foxed, interior else unmarked.

Contemporary polished calf with an elaborate decorative design stamped in gold on both boards and spine, plain endpapers, all edges gilt. Owner inscription in ink on front free endpaper (dated Christmas, 1844). Later bookplate on front pastedown. Covers are rubbed with wear at the edges of the boards, spine is rubbed and faded, the engraved plates and tissue guards are foxed, very good.
