GB: Longman, Hurst ..., 1817. Small paper subscriber's copy. 462/500 copies. Half white leather over marbled boards (bound by Caldwell of Dublin). Marbled endpapers. Frontispieces of Northumberland and Puckle and illustrated throughout text (twenty or so vignettes). Top edge gold. Moderately heavy spotting to first 20 or so leaves but hardly any to remainder of book. Damp mark to top edge of first ten or so leaves. Leather is rather grubby in places and extremities of covers bit rubbed. Contents generally clean and tight. . 1st Thus. Hardback. Good/No DW.

Printed for the Author, 1713. Hardcover. Good. . Full tooled calf with gilt lettering and embellishments on spine, gilt dentelles. Light rubbing at edges, light shelf wear. One stain on front board. Overall a really nice copy for its age. A few pages have minor foxing, overall clean. Binding sturdy.

Short 4to, in an fine contemporary binding of diced Russia covers, the boards with armorial centerpiece surrounded by elaborate gilt and blind-stamped foliate borders. Red morocco spine, presumably later, but equally ornate; inner & outer dentelles, marbled edges. London: Printed for the proprietor by John Johnson, and sold by Longman, et al., 1817. The frontis and title are foxed and dampstained but other pages generally quite clean. Limited ediiton, Large Paper Copy [Imperial Edition], one of 200. With three ALS laid-in -- two from James Rimell & Son Ltd, a London Bookseller to Edgar H. Wells, rare book dealer in New York from 1921 to 1938 on Madison Ave., discussing the authenticity of the Imperial Edition, and one from Philip Hofer [to Wells] on New York Public Library letterhead, verifying this copy as an Imperial Edition together with bibliographical details for the various editions of this work. All letters dated 1932. Hofer also invites Wells to tea, offering to show him copies of the three issue described in his letter. With a series of engravings drawn by John Thurston. First few leaves toned, mostly marginal; infrequent additional and minor text spotting. This copy Satin (Mounted on Imperial) of which is one of only 7 produced from a limited edition of 735 produced in various forms. Blue Morocco, 5 raised bands, Gilt embellishments and titles. Satin endpapers with Gilt embellishments to front and rear pastedowns. All fore edges are tipped in gilt. One contemporary name and date 0f 1866 to ffep. Contemporary gift inscription in ink from Robert Watson Wade (Who is also one of the subscribers listed) to John Capel esq and dated 1823 to ffep. 107pp and printed by John Johnson, St James Street, Clerkenwell in 1817 Book condition: Some moderate to heavy rubbing to board and spine edges. Small pull at the head of the spine. Tiny amount of loss to the base of the spine. One worm hole in the rear board. 2mm deep. Long since vacated. Blue satin endpapers a trifle foxed.
