Hardcover. 255, (3) pages; Clean and secure in original quarto orange cloth with gilt lettering and decoration at front board and spine; corners still sharp, spine faded. Text block and all twelve colour plates with tissue guards in near fine condition. Pictorial endpapers. Peer Gynt is one of the most widely performed Norwegian plays of all time. This edition contains the fabulous illustrations of Arthur Rackham, one of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration. Rackham’s artistry combined haunting humour with dream-like romance. .

London: George G Harrap, 1936. First edition with these illustrations (hardback). 8vo (25cm by 19cm), 256pp. 12 colour plates, text illustrations. Original deluxe publisher's binding of full green morocco, gilt titling to the spine, top edge gilt. The book is intact, but the binding is a little scruffy, with rubbing and scuffing to the spine and to the edges of the boards, and some sunning and uneven darkening. There is some light scattered foxing of the preliminary pages, but the contents are generally in very good condition. Overall, just about a good copy of an unusual variant; this binding has the titling and publisher's imprint to the spine, but the front board is unlettered.

Born in Norway, Ibsen was a major 19th-century playwright, theatre director, and poet. He is often referred to as "the father of realism" and is one of the founders of Modernism in theatre. He is the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after Shakespeare. Peer Gynt is a Norwegian fairy tale on which the play is loosely based, and several of the characters are modelled after Ibsen's own family, notably his parents. Original printed color pictorial dust jacket (with "Harrap" on the spine) with a neatly repaired tear on front near spine. Original gilt decorated brown cloth. Original pictorial endpapers. Title-page printed in green and black. Two full-page color plates with descriptive tissue guards and two half-page black and white illustrations. A Fine copy in a Near Fine dust jacket. A great rarity. These were obviously produced in minimal quantity for the publisher's salespeople to solicit advance orders from bookshops. The 'list' of illustrations leaf states "[There will be Twelve Plates in Colour]" The vignettes on the half-title and title-page in the published edition are printed in a much lighter and brighter green. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a bump at the base of the spine, the vellum clean and bright. The contents with a previous owner's bookplate to the front blank endpaper are otherwise clean throughout and without spotting, inscriptions or stamps.
