First edition, limited to 575 numbered copies (this is copy number 87), signed by Rackham on the limitation page. 4to (29cm by 23cm), 170pp. 16 colour plates, mounted on art card and protected by tissues. Original white vellum spine, parchment boards, gilt titling to the front boardand the spine, top edge gilt. There is some rubbing of the boards, some minor spotting of the preliminary pages, and a mnor scuffmark to the corner of one of the plates, but this is generally a bright good to very good copy overall.

With 16 tipped-in color plates and 24 text vignettes. Among the favorite ballads the full-color illustrations bring to life are "Lord Randal", "Chevy Chase", "The Twa Corbies" and "Sir Patrick Spens". Latimore & Haskell 50-1. Riall 137. Contemporary full blue calf, with silk moire endpapers, handsomely bound by Monastery Hill. T.e.g. Front joint expertly repaired. A number of small abrasions on spine. Abraded edges as well, especially front upper edge. Text and plates are clean.

Spine slightly rubbed and slightly discoloured, tiny crease at head of spine, boards just very slightly darkened along the edges, front endpaper lightly browned, contents very nice, no inscriptions. With colour frontispiece and 15 additional colour plates mounted on handmade paper, tissue guards captioned in red, and further 24 black and white illustrations by Rackham throughout. In the original quarter "vellum" cream paper composite publishers' binding; gilt titles and Rackham vignettes to boards, gilt spine title and ornaments; top-edge gilt with other edges uncut. Binding lightly soiled, and slightly bumped to corners and spine tips, mild offsetting to endpapers. Overall, a Very Good firm, tight, square, and clean copy free of annotations of inscriptions with bright vibrant plates. Collection of tragic Scottish, English, and border ballads including The Twa Corbies, The Lament of the Border Widow, and Lass of Lochroyan illustrated in Rackham's characteristic style. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. . Quarto. With mounted frontispiece and 15 mounted plates (each with a printed tissue guard). Also with 24 illustrated head-pieces and with text ornaments of eagles, snakes, dragons, and other animals and mythological creatures. Endpapers toned. Ink signature dated Christmas 1919 on front pastedown. A bit of light toning to edges but overall a very good, very bright copy.
